Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey explores the Dunedin city centre, including going into the famous Cadbury factory and several museums before heading out to St Claire Beach.
Today's Journey
The historic Otago Daily Times building. Many of the buildings in the city centre are historic from the Central Otago gold rush in the 1860s. |
Reaching the Cadbury Factory. The tour entrance is on the other side of the building. |
I join one of the very last tours they run before the factory completely closes and the land is reclaimed to build a new hospital. |
Across the road from the factory is the Dunedin Railway Station, New Zealand's most photographed building. It was built in 1906 and fortunately doesn't have any tall buildings around it making it very photogenic. |
Exploring the Settlers Museum, with a lot of artefacts throughout Dunedin's history, particularly during its founding days of the Otago Gold Rush where it was the port through which travellers came from all around the world to seek their fortunes. |
I head up to The Octagon, the focal point of the city centre. Here I stop for lunch. |
From The Octagon, I head south to St Clair Beach where a good swell is breaking for the surfers on this mild day. |
The remains of the old pier eroding away from the strong waves of the Southern Ocean. |
A southerly storm is coming up from Antarctica, so I decide to head back into the city. |
Back in the city centre. It is cold and cloudy, but no rain is falling yet. Some of the frontal systems bring instantaneous change in weather, but this is just a gentle warning of the two days of rain forecast. |
