Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey departs the sheltered Waiopaoa Hut when the rain clears, following the easy grade track to Korokoro camping ground with a side trip upstream to Korokoro Falls. The track becomes rough around the headlands between Korokoro and Maraunui, but we eventually arrive at the very rustic Marauiti Hut.

Today's Journey

Caption

Cold rain falls overnight but stops falling in the early morning as I return to the edge of the lake. The cloud covers the hills and it is not long before rain starts falling again, so I return to the hut.

The rain does not clear, so we pack up and leave the hut. About half an hour later the cloud attempts to clear with the sun starting to show, but quickly disappears again.

We turn off the main track to follow a rough track following the Ke Korokoroowhaitiri Creek inland.

The side track ends at the magnificent Korokoro Falls, which is a little swollen from all the rain. The rain has stopped falling now, making for ideal photography conditions.

We return along the side track and stop for lunch at Korokoro camping ground at the mouth of the stram next to the lake before continuing.

Caption

The track over the headlands is quite rough and poorly maintained with some scrambling needed, but occasionally the forest clears for rewarding views across the lake.

After several hours of slow progress, we reach the Maraunui camping ground for a brief stop before continuing to our destination.

After another small hill, we reach the deep grassy flat of Marauiti, where we will be staying the night. We spot the hut a couple of minutes later as we head towards the lake.

Inside the hut. We are relieved to have arrived, but the colour scheme in this old hut is terrible.

About 30 metres in front of the hut is the edge of the turquoise lake. The rain has stopped falling by now but it is still cold.
