Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey starts passing the outside of the Biscoe Islands running parallel to the Antarctic Peninsula. We pass Lavosier Island in the early morning into Matha Channel into the icy Crystal Harbour. We pass the northern tip of Adelaide Island and closely approach Liard Island to get our first glimpse of the Antarctic Peninsula. Here we ceremoniously cross the Antarctic Circle before heading as far as we could into Crystal Harbour and dropping anchor. Here we head out sea kayaking in amongst the icebergs before stopping at a bar on top of a flat iceberg. We return to the ship and head back out of Crystal Harbour and continue our journey southward around the outside of Adelaide Island.

Today's Journey

Climbing up onto the deck in the early morning, we are now cruising through a field of broken ice of broken icebergs from the many glaciers along the peninsula.

We enter a channel to the north of Adelaide Island now visible here through the field of icebergs.

Passing many spectacular icebergs as we approach the Antarctic Circle.

Celebrating the crossing of the Antarctic Circle. From here southwards the sun stays below the horizon all day during the winter solstice, and above the horizon all day during the summer solstice.

Huge ice domes cover the low islands in the icy channel.

Arriving at a bar set up on an iceberg. This flat berg is sea ice which has never melted over the summer.

A spectacular glacial iceberg which has turned over. The blue light shining through the iceberg is amazing, especially in overcast weather like this.

From the icerberg bar we return to the ship.

We head back into the calm open water to head around Adelaide Island continuing southward to see how much further we can continue heading along the Antarctic Peninsula.
