Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey takes us along the Laguna de Los Tres track from the village up the mountainside for a spectacular sunrise view of Mount Fitz Roy. From the lookout I continue along the track climbing a steep rise to the top of the terminus of an old glacier with a spectacular view of Laguna de Los Tres with the mountains towering above it. From there I return along the track passing a Laguna Madre before descending back into the village.
Today's Journey
Starting the Laguna de Los Tres track before first light, the Milky Way shines brightly over the dark mountains overhead as I moderately ascend from El Chalten |
Watching the sunlight of the rising sun illuminate the top of Mount Fitz Roy viewed from the hilltop Mirador del Fitz Roy. |
View across to Mount Fitz Roy from above a subalpine swampy bog area about 700 metres above sea level. The jagged peaks of the mountain towers high above the surrounding glaciers and forested hills. |
The track rises steeply up the moraine from Rio Blanco camping ground. The severely windswept trees are already showing their autumn colours. |
Trekking up the glacial deposits towards the viewpoint with the steep section now behind us. |
At the viewpoint over Laguna de los Tres with the spectacular Mount Fitz Roy towering two and a half kilometres above it. |
Descending the steep track back towards Rio Blanco looking northward to more jagged mountains and the remote Chilean village of Villa O'Higgins on the other side. |
Crossing a bridge over the stream draining Laguna de low Tres and the nearby larger Laguna Sucia. |
Diverting along a different route back passing the waters of Laguna Capri as a breeze begins to blow. |
Descending the last bit into El Chalten as the breeze suddenly strengthens to cyclone speed making this last part of the descent quite difficult. |
