Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes us along the Laguna de Los Tres track from the village up the mountainside for a spectacular sunrise view of Mount Fitz Roy. From the lookout I continue along the track climbing a steep rise to the top of the terminus of an old glacier with a spectacular view of Laguna de Los Tres with the mountains towering above it. From there I return along the track passing a Laguna Madre before descending back into the village.

Starting the Laguna de Los Tres track before first light, the Milky Way shines brightly over the dark mountains overhead as I moderately ascend from El Chalten

View across to Mount Fitz Roy from above a subalpine swampy bog area about 700 metres above sea level. The jagged peaks of the mountain towers high above the surrounding glaciers and forested hills.

The track rises steeply up the moraine from Rio Blanco camping ground. The severely windswept trees are already showing their autumn colours.

Descending the last bit into El Chalten as the breeze suddenly strengthens to cyclone speed making this last part of the descent quite difficult.
