Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey is my final day in Patagonia, and I explore the tourist town of Pucon, and explore parts of Lake Villarrica. It is a restful day before a long trip out of Patagonia tomorrow to explore the rest of South America.
Today's Journey
A jet flying south to Punta Arenas from Santiago passes over the perpetually smoking summit of Vulcan Villarrica as I start exploring the town in the early morning. After a big day of hiking yesterday, I relax here on my final day in Patagonia. |
Passing some interesting sculptures just before reaching the little port at the edge of the lake. |
The lake is calm today as I look out towards the coast about 110 kilometres away, where the epicentre of last century's largest magnitude 9.5 earthquake was centred. |
A sign at the waterfront with the volcano framed behind it. |
Several tour boats sit in the mirror smooth water. The tourist season has just finished so they are being prepared for the approaching long winter. |
Exploring the town centre of Pucon. It is quiet today, but during the tourist season it gets very busy here. |
Returning to the lake in the late afternoon, I spot these indigenous sculptures. |
Crossing the small peninsula headland, I arrive at a large sweeping bay. There are a lot of people relaxing on the black volcanic sand beach and some swimming in the water. It is a lot warmer here than it was in Bariloche. |
I relax watching the golden sun setting over the lake. |
Returning through the town as the last rays of the setting sun hit the mountain. I return for a dinner with the group and an early night as we have a big day travelling tomorrow. |
