Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey takes me from Montreal continuing downstream along the St Lawrence River to its mouth at Quebec City. We spend the morning exploring the city's historic old quarter. From there we head across the river and cross back into USA travelling through the beautiful White Mountains eventually arriving in the outskirts of Boston.

Today's Journey

Leaving Montreal before sunrise, we continue following the St Lawrence River downstream.

Passing the impressive Pierre Laporte bridges crossing the river where it flows into the sea as we reach Quebec City.

Walking up the Rue du Cul-de-Sac in the old quarter of Quebec City. There are different themes on displays here. This week the theme is umbrellas.

We pass the stone buildings of the old quarter as we walk through the Place Royale.

The houses here along Rue Notre-Dame have a lot of character, with large pot plants growing before the harsh winter sets in.

Climbing to the top of the hill above the old quarter to the grand Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac, a hotel built in 1893.

Rain starts falling as we leave Quebec City. The trees are changing colour with the autumn, so definitely time to start heading south again. From the city we head south away from the river before making the border crossing at Sandy Bay township into scenic Vermont.

The rain continues to fall and the sky stays very gloomy as we approach the White Mountains, named for the snow that falls on them in winter.

The White Mountains are covered in evergreen forest making for a dark green colour at this time of year. About here we cross from Vermont into New Hampshire.

From the mountains the terrain gradually flattens as we continue towards the coast, eventually crossing into Massachusetts, reaching the outskirts of Boston in the early evening.
