Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey starts with a sunrise beside the calm waters of Stamford before I join the commuters heading into Manhattan to Grand Central Station. From there I head across to the Hudson Wharves and follow the High Trail along the old elevated commuter railway system running roughly parallel to the Hudson River. At the end of the walkway, I head to a nearby metro station and catch the train under the Hudson River to Jersey City from where I head back to the river and watch the spectacular lower Manhattan as the sun sets behind me.
Today's Journey
Watching the sun rise at Stamford over a nearby headland with Long Island visible in the distance. |
Catching the commuter train into New York with all the commuters coming in from Connecticut. |
Arriving at Grand Central Station, and walking along 42nd street heading westward towards Hudson River. |
Hiking the high trail, an old elevated commuter train line which once went all over Manhattan Island. This is the only remnant left and it has been converted into an elevated walkway running from midtown Manhattan towards Lower Manhattan. |
Walking through some markets which would have once been one of the train stations. The elevated trains would have been very noisy, so thankfully they all run underground now. |
I eventually reach the end of the trail and walk a couple of blocks to the Hudson River from where I can see down to Lower Manhattan. |
After following the Hudson River downstream a short distance, I head back a block or two to a subway station to catch a train under the river to Jersey City. |
Exploring Jersey City after checking into a hotel. |
From the city centre I walk along the Hudson River Waterfront Walkway to the nearby Lefrak Point Lighthouse to watch the setting sun reflect off the spectacular buildings of Lower Manhattan. |
Looking back from the point into Jersey City as the last rays of the dusk disappear over the western horizon. |
