THE CAPITAL of the largest nation on Earth has a most fascinating history. For centuries, it entertained an almost fairy tale existence, with much of its old architecture reflective of this.

The communist revolution of October 1917 suddenly repressed much of what had been Russia’s magic. Suppressed into the coldness of communism isolated from the rest of the world, the Soviet Union stripped away its personality as it focused on heavy industry, its strong military, and repressive gulags.

Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Russia began its slow recovery reticently embracing modern capitalism, whilst simultaneously reverting back to some of its traditions.

Today, with the help of a local guide, I was about to discover the magic of Russia’s fascinating capital city.
