Introduction to today's journey

ONCE covered by kilometre thick glaciers, the Tierra del Fuego archepelago. These glaciers carved out deep scars which have since been filled with the cold seawater of the Southern Ocean, creating a maze of channels. One of the longest of these is the 240 kilometre long Beagle Channel which cuts the southernmost islands off from Tierra del Fuego. Much of the bottom of each glacier remains deep underwater, but some resistant outcrops of rock poke above the surface creating predator free refuge for the abundant wildlife along the channel's shores.

Today's journey explores the foreshore of Ushuaia, the world's southernmost city. In the afternoon I take a cruise out to some of the offshore islets in the Beagle Channel then heading to the western side of the city.
