Introduction to today's journey
THE KING of the subantarctic islands around the world, the king penguin is the second largest species and appears very similar to the larger emperor penguin. They are prolific on Fawkland and South Georgia Islands, but there is one colony in South America hidden in a remote bay in Tierra del Fuego.
Today I join a new tour group departing Ushuaia heading northward initially through moutains, then across subantarctic savannah to cross the border into Chile and continue northwards to the Strait of Magellan. We take a diversion to South America's only king penguin colony before taking a ferry across the strait and setting up camp on its northern shores.
