A RELATIVELY short distance south of Lake Taupo is Mount Ruapehu. This is the North Island's tallest volcano, topping even Mount Taranaki. This is the southernmost in a chain of volcanoes heading north across the North Island and out into the sea off the coast of Bay of Plenty.
Mount Ruapehu is also the most active volcano in recent history. Shortly before moving away from New Zealand eight years ago it was undergoing a series of eruptions causing the whole of the North Island's airspace to be closed and causing ash rain of corrosive volcanic grit to fall over parts of the island from the volcanic cloud rising ten kilometres high.
