LA PAZ sits in an old glacial bowl at around three and a half kilometres above sea level at the edge of the Atacama Desert.
Looking south Mount Illimani dominates the skyline. Towering at 6438 metres above sea level this spectacular mountain is covered in bright glaciers, which gives its name of the water bearer. Streams run off these glaciers forming a permanent water supply for the villages below.
