STARTING early in the morning in very muggy rainforest, the well graded trail ascended the precipitous plug in the centre of the Tweed Volcano.

The trail gradually became rougher as it ascended through different vegetation zones until reaching a 300 metre long chain leading the way up a very steep ridge to the summit.

Despite the elevated altitude, even the summit was hot and muggy with hardly a breath of wind even though the surrounding clouds were moving from the north. They cleared enough to provide views of the different parts of the volcanic rim. There were a surprising number of people on the trail today, all celebrating their Christmas this year by climbing the mountain.
