A VERY long stretch of calm water preceeding the river's biggest rapids marked our final day on the river.
Towering cliffs had risen on either side of the river for most of the five day journey, but nowhere quite as spectactular as here along Te Wahi Pari - the place of cliffs. The almost vertical walls were covered in ground ferns. Higher parts of the cliffs above recent flood lines contained tree ferns. Above the highest flood levels the large trees grew.
There were very distinctive lines between the layers of vegetation, showing the levels of the huge floods that had raged down the river stripping off all the vegetation. The most recent flood event was in June last year when the river rose eleven metres into a roaring torrent. The vegetation had since the flood quickly covered the cliffs again, holding it together until the next flood comes.
