THE STRONG Arctic wind brought a cold and stormy day with a high of seven degrees. Despite the weather I spent much of the day exploring parts of the city I hadn't yet seen, and as the sun set commencing the long evening twilight I returned to the city to find it vibrant with life celebrating the autumn festival.

Returning to Red Square the buildings were all brilliantly lit up, especially the long shopping centre where the gothic architecture was magnificantly illuminated as seen behind me.

The sky darkened and the chill worsened, but still there were plenty of people out there revelling in the autumn festival, perhaps making the most of things before the coldness of winter sets in. I couldn't linger long though, I needed to return to the train station to catch my final long distance train a short 600 kilometres up to St Petersburg.
