Well hello friends. Today I'm exploring one of the beaches in Jervis Bay. It is a beautiful area here. It is one of the most beautiful parts of the entire Australian coastline. Where I am now and all this land here going inland for about five or six kilometres to the coast and going back that way as far as you can see for about ten kilometres is called Jervis Bay Territory. This is the final State or Territory I've been to on the Australian mainland. As of now, I've been to every State and Territory, well the mainland ones anyway.
Jervis Bay Territory is tied up with the Australian Capital Territory where Canberra is based. When all the States and Territories were divided up back in 1901, the only way of transporting anything around the country was by ship. The ACT doesn't have any coastline around it so what they did was they set up another territory here where they were going to set up a large port probably in this bay. That never happened but this was retained as a separate territory which is still tied up as part of the Australian Capital Territory. Not many people know about this one as it is very small and it only has two small villages here with mostly Aboriginal people living in them. It doesn't have a big city like all the other States and Territories have.
You can just see the entrance to the bay out there at the jagged cliff. Looking out that way you can see into New South Wales and into the ranges in behind Wollongong. The other end of those ranges was where I finished the big long walk along the Sydney coast just over a year ago. I'm just exploring this area. It is absolutely pristine here. As I mentioned before it is just two villages with a couple of roads and a lot of walking tracks which I hope to explore in the next day or two.
Someone mentioned to me this morning they were looking at building a nuclear power plant here back in the 1960s. Fortunately that never happened. This is a really pristine area about two hundred and twenty kilometres south of Sydney. It is a very beautiful area. I'm going to spend today exploring this local area and enjoy the beach. Thanks friends for joining me today and I'll catch you somewhere else tomorrow. Until then, ciao for now.
