Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey starts crossing Bass Strait until Tasmania comes into view. We dock in Devonport and upon disembarking, I explore the town before heading to Launceston.
Today's Journey
Upon waking up at first light, I am over half way across Bass Strait with mainland Australia now far away over the horizon. A strong head wind blows bringing a moderate swell rolling the ship. |
The sun rises and we continue for another hour before the mountains of northern Tasmania peek over the horizon. |
We approach land before heading up the clear blue calm waters of Mersey River in Devonport. |
The ship docks about a kilometre up the river at the ferry terminal where we all disembark. |
I head around the river to the city centre where I reach a viewpoint looking upstream towards the distant mountains. |
With the middle of the day to spare, I explore the quiet Devonport town centre. |
In the late afternoon I catch a bus crossing over the northern part of the island passing fertile farmland. |
Sheep graze on the rolling hills of this very peaceful countryside. |
After travelling a hundred kilometres, we reach the historic Launceston, Tasmania's second largest city. |
Here I settle ready to explore the city tomorrow morning. |
