Introduction to today's journey
Cairns is a vibrant city in Tropical North Queensland. The city has over the years evolved from a gold rush port into a bustling tourist hub as an ideal base to travel to the two nearby UNESCO World Heritage sites, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. The waterfront provides a bustling esplanade displaying the city's relaxed lifestyle, encapsulating the city's spirit of adventure, relaxation and natural beauty.Today's journey flies further northward to Cairns where we explore the city centre and marina.
Today's Journey
Flying northward from Brisbane, I reach Cairns Airport about 1700 kilometres up the coast and arrive in the city centre. It is the middle of winter but the weather is very mild being in the dry season. |
A huge fig tree in the middle of Cairns City. |
Looking northwards across the mudflats from near the marina. These mudflats are the city beach running between the marina and the airport. |
Looking at the huge yachts moored at the marina.
Numerous boats sail along the river near the marina. |
Some boats here are very impressive. |
I watch the tide creep in over the mudflats under the mountains. |
The city comes right up to the waterfront. |
The tide has by now covered much of the mud flats and is quickly approaching the beach. |
An egret watches the water for fish for its dinner. |
The last of the sunlight reflects off the mountains and clouds. |
The sun sets behind the city to start a very mild winter night. |
