Introduction to today's journey
Cairns was founded in 1876 and named after Sir William Wellington Cairns. It started as a shanty town supporting the port during the gold rush of the Hodgkinson River. It gradually grew to become a city in 1923, then became a military base during World War II before slowly transforming into a modern city becoming a thriving hub of international tourism.
Today's journey explores more of the Cairns city centre before flying above the reef back to Brisbane.
