PrologueWHEN Emperor Gia Long ascended to the throne of Vietnam, he began what would eventually be a successful expansion of his kingdom southward to cover the delta of the Mekong River, and what is now Cambodia. At the time the Vietnamese capital was in Hanoi, near the country’s northernmost extreme. This was too far away from the newly claimed lands of the south. He therefore set off southward to find a new capital city. He had done very well for himself considering he had been forced into hiding 25 years earlier as a teenager when the rest of his family had been hunted and executed. Thanks to the help of the French Government, he managed to regain the throne to begin what would be the last of the Vietnamese dynasties. Leaving Hanoi would perhaps give him the freedom to restore the Confucianism faith that had been lost to Vietnam for many years. It was in the year 1802 when he discovered the city of Hue occupying the banks of the beautiful Perfume River. Upon the river’s northern bank he began to build his new palace setting in stone the new Vietnamese capital.
