Prologue

IN A time before time, deep in the jungles of northern Borneo, a small tribe of the indigenous Dusun people reached a great river. Here the water supply was abundant year round and where the availability of food was limitless under the cover of the enormous trees towering fifty metres above their heads. Only the occasional limestone bluff stood above the jungle.

On one side of the river towered one of these limestone bluffs, but the other side had a small plateau floodplain over ten metres above the river. A natural clearing on this plateau made the ideal place for this tribe to settle.

The tribespeople built their village a little inland from the river. They carved their own dugout canoes to fish the river, and to provide passage across the river for any travellers passing through their lands.

For many generations these people lived in this jungle paradise in almost complete isolation from the outside world.
