Epilogue
THE MASSEUSE very gently stepped onto my back. I’m not sure whether she had a great sense of balance or whether she had something to hold onto above her head, but she walked up and down the length of my back with ease massaging it very firmly with all the weight of her tiny frame. The pressure was intense, easing away the tensions of the day.
She then gently climbed off and signalled for me to turn over. The music was still softly playing as she knelt down and sat over my abdominals to massage the top of my torso.
She heavily rubbed my shoulders and chest relieving the tension, working her way down my torso.
At last when the massage was over, she signalled me to get dressed again before suddenly disappearing behind the curtain, leaving me alone in the upstairs room. I never knew her name, but I suppose that was a part of Cambodian loyalty – deliver the job professionally.

Years later I still think of Sot, the man my own age who epitomised Cambodia and its amazing people. .They have experienced more than their fair share of hardship in the worst of atrocities, but despite this, they remain some of the happiest and friendliest people in the world.
