Introduction to today's journey

THE RUGGED South Shetland Islands lie at the edge of the rough Drake Passage close to the Antarctic Convergence Zone. Almost perpetually cloudy from the cold mists of the convergence zone, these islands are a mostly submerged mountain range of volcanic cones running parallel to the Antarctic Peninsula 120 kilometres away. These mountains submerge completely as they cross around the right of Drake Passage to re-emerge at the bottom of South America.

Today's journey reaches the South Shetland Islands at sunrise. We explore some of the islands but conditions from the Drake Passage are rough from some approaching bad weather. After a couple of failed attempts we set off across the Drake Passage back towards Ushuaia.
