Introduction to today's journey
ANTARCTICA can only be reached by sea or sky, both methods being very expensive and controlled due to the intent of ongoing preservation of this last wilderness of Earth. Flights to the continent seldom result in a landing, and large cruise ships are unable to make landings. Small cruise ships with no more than 200 passengers on the other hand are allowed to approach land and make landings. This has given rise to the expedition cruises which is ideal for exploring the continent. I have joined one of these cruises in Ushuaia, the closest city to Antarctica.
Today's journey starts in the port city of Ushuaia, where I board the cruise ship and depart following the Beagle Channel towards the Drake Passage.
