Introduction to today's journey
THE MOUTH of the Hudson River has for a couple of centuries been the principal port of trade for North America. Approaching Lower Manhattan is the huge copper Statue of Liberty donated by the French to commemorate the United States' independence from England. Looking from the Statue of Liberty stands the gleaming towers of Lower Manhattan, the tallest of which is the new World Trade Centre, standing over half a kilometre high. This magnificent tower replaces the older twin towers destroyed in September 2001.
Today's journey returns to Lower Manhattan where I explore Battery Park, finding MIB Headquarters, before heading to the site of the twin towers, now a memorial. From there I head to the top of the new tower to once more get a spectacular view across New York City before doing a cruise out of Hudson River to the Statue of Liberty and up the East River.
