THE WINDIEST part of New Zealand is not through Cook Strait, or even in Wellington, as many people believe. New Zealand's windiest place is actually a little further north in the hills surrounding the Manawatu Gorge.

On lush green farmland a number of wind generators have been installed. They noisily whirl around as the wind blasts over the range, generating electricity to suplement the hydro electricity generated down in the South Island.
