FLYING out from Wellington Airport back towards Brisbane the plane quickly leaves the North Island flying over the notorious Cook Strait. From there it turns north-westward towards Australia.
Whilst still ascending, the plane crosses the Marlborough Sounds, a spectacular patchwork of mountains rising out of flooded valleys. The rivers that feed these valleys are not sufficient to have deposited sediments to fill them since the end of the last ice age when sea levels rose 120 metres.
These valleys will continue to be flooded until the next ice age returns.
