IT WAS a hot humid morning in Sapporo, the largest city in Hokkaido. I entered a large dome stadium. It was stifling hot in there without air conditioning.
It was a once-in-a-lifetime event. I normally don't go to live sporting events, but whilst in Japan I had to see some sumo wrestling.
Whilst the bouts themselves were short, it quickly became clear to me that this is not only a sport, but the competitors who commit to this do so with their entire lives. They live a very regimented life steeped in ancient religious traditions that no Westerner could comprehend. Sumo wrestling is truly a spiritual experience.
