FLYING north westward from Brisbane nearly half the nine hour flight to Brunei was over the parched inland of tropical Australia. It was the height of dry season so the barren landscape far below stood flat and lifeless.
Finally we reached the brilliant blue waters of the Gulf of Carpentaria where the view became a lot more colourful as the plane followed the coast towards Darwin.
Eventually the clouds grew in size into huge storms over the dark peninsulas of Sulawesi and south eastern Borneo as the plane gradually came in to land at Brunei for a quick transfer to another plane flying the short distance up to Kota Kinabalu for the start of a journey around Sabah.
