KOTA Kinabalu is a modern bustling small city. Once offshore though it is a completely different story. There are a number of islands, one of which contains a fishing village. The forested land is too rugged to settle, so the houses of this village are built on stilts in the turquoise water in the sheltered bays of the island.
The crude houses are built from whatever resources can be obtained with no consideration for building consents. Standing just a metre above the water the houses stand close together. There is little sign of life here as most occupants are out fishing. Some houses have lines of washing hanging from them, brightly colouring the grey wooden village. Most houses have fish drying out in the sun hanging just like the lines of washing. A strong smell of decomposing fish fills the air.
