IT WAS the most spectacular sunrise I had ever seen. Having climbed for much of the night I reached the 4095 metre high summit of Mount Kinabalu in time to watch the sun rise. I was just below the level of the alto nimbus cloud that enshrouded the lower peaks standing like fingers above the glacially scarred landscape below. The sun filtered through the layers of cloud but provided almost no warmth to the bitterly cold wind. Looking in the other direction, a rainbow on its side appeared beside on of the lower peaks. On the other side of the small peak I could see the shadow of the mountain stretching out over two hundred kilometres to the east over the jungles of Borneo and the South China Sea beyond.
