ALONG the north coast of Borneo is the beautiful port city of Sandakan. This city was once the capital of Sabah until the Japanese took over in World War II. The city became famous for all the wrong reasons. A large concentration camp was set up nearby and Australian and British soldiers were marched to Mount Kinabalu. Few survived.
Since the war Sandakan has sat as a quiet city. A Buddhist temple sits high on the hill overlooking the city and the harbour.
