LAKE Titicaca is a vast inland ocean at nearly four kilometres above sea level. Here the cold sun is very strong, colours are bright and the water is very dark.

There is a large community of people living on the lake. They build large floating mats out of the reeds that grow here. These floating pontoons are stable enough to walk on. Upon these pontoons they build their houses out of reeds. Even their boats are built from reeds.

This is a stunning case of self-sufficiency. The very existence of this tribe depends on the waters of the lake, the reeds that grow in it, and the fish that lurk beneath the surface.
