ON THE day before starting my climb up Mount Kilimanjaro, I explored Marangu village on the lower slopes of the mountain. Here houses were nestled in against the steep slopes of the mountain. each house had its own garden growing bananas and vegetables in the fertile volcanic soil where deadly snakes slithered in amongst the dense undergrowth.
Rushing streams and large waterfalls surrounded the village of friendly locals. Many of the men here were away working as porters and guides on the mountain. Others were working at the hotel or other tourism support areas.
I then rested with my fellow climbers eating as much as I could in anticipation of the long trek.
