THE GREAT Barrier Reef is the largest area of coral in the world. In the middle of this reef off the coast of Cairns when you lose sight of the mainland is a small sandy cay in the middle of the ocean.
Dark patches loom beneath the surface. These are fascinating coral reefs teeming with life. Although it is the middle of winter here, the water temperature is a balmy 23 degrees. The prevailing south east trade wind blows strong today and although the waves near the coast were pretty rough, out here in the shelter of the reefs the waves were surprisingly small for such open ocean.
