I COULD hear the waves of the open ocean breaking on the beach on the other side of South Stradbroke Island, from where the sun rose.

The air was filled with the acrid smell of smoke from a forest fire burning near Bribie Island some 150 kilometres to the north, filling the sky with a haze that brilliantly illuminated the almost blood red sunrise.

Shortly after sunrise we weighed anchor and headed around the maze of channels to Jumpinpin, the channel broken through from the open sea separating North Stradbroke and South Stradbroke Islands. From there we headed back towards Jacob's Well.
