THE NOTORIOUS is a replica fifteenth century caravel sailing up and down the Australian East Coast. It was built near Melbourne by its owners, a married couple. They spent ten years building it from reclaimed timber before it was launched in 2011.
Berthed at Brisbane's Southbank, I was fortunate to be able to spend some time aboard photographing its amazing workmanship, the bulky hand crafted timbers sealed tight with tar. It was a perfectly constructed replica of a Portuguese ship from 530 years ago.
I watched the sun setting nearby. It was almost eerie seeing this ship from the fifteenth century silently set against the modern twenty first century city background.
