A ROUGH head swell greeted me as I headed out from Kaiteriteri along the golden beaches towards Split Apple Rock. Only the lee of Ngaio Island and Toko Ngawha Points provided any shelter from the cold wind brought in by the northerly sea breeze.
The giant boulder was still suspended on its stack of rocks in the turquoise water, cleaven in two and covered in patches of yellow lichen as it has done for many thousands of years.
