NEW ZEALAND has gained quite a reputation being "Middle Earth" with the production of the Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Nowhere is this more evident than here in Wellington.
It has been a number of years since I last passed through Wellington Airport. During these years they have given the airport quite a "Middle Earth" makeover with enormous statues from the films. This included a massive Gollum statue and several full sized eagles, including this one with Gandalf riding on it.
Already I could feel I was in another world of a heightened reality, on my way to doing a trek in one of the most spectacular and remote parts of the country.
