WHILST most hikers start tramping the Heaphy Track from Brown Hut, for me this marked the end of a week long journey crossing from Westland to Golden Bay.

The morning mist rose as I headed across Golden Bay, a remote community at the top of the South Island. It was connected to the rest of the South Island only by the Takaka Hill Road, New Zealand’s longest hill road back towards Motueka. Takaka is the largest settlement in Golden Bay. Its arty alternative culture and remoteness gives it the title of being New Zealand’s answer to Nimbin.
