THICK cloud cover at Deception Bay's esplanade did not produce the expected sunrise, but the cloud broke enough about half an hour later for the orange rays of light to stream down over the distant wetland forests of the Redcliffe Peninsula and illuminate the remaining water of the vast mudflats of the back of the bay.

From the northernmost end of the esplanade at the top of Deception Bay I followed the path through the wetlands in the heavy morning humidity. The swampy wetlands were teeming with birds that had in recent weeks completed their southward migration from the North Pacific, some from as far away as Siberia and Alaska. The spring tide flooded in, eventually reaching its peak as I was approaching the Scarborough Boat Harbour before starting to draw out again as I reached Oyster Point, the northernmost point of the Redcliffe Peninsula.
