AN EARLY morning pickup at the hotel introduced me to a new group of six for the day. Heading out through the insane Beijing traffic stopping at a jade factory before leaving the city. As the rugged mountains to the north of the city appeared out of the thick haze, we stopped at the Ming Tombs heading deep underground in the temple to where the old emperors were buried.
From the tombs we headed into the spectacular mountains to eventually reach a small village from where we caught a cable car to the top of the jagged ridge to where the great wall ran along the top. I followed the wall dropping steeply to a small stone village on a deep saddle where I'm standing. From the stone buildings the perfectly constructed granite wall climbed the steep ridges to towers at each apex and summit along the ridge.
