BASED on the other side of the Great Dividing Range, the Caper White Butterfly (Belenois java teutonia) migrates hundreds of kilometres across to the east coast in their countless millions once every six to ten years.

Good rains to the west triggered this year's migration. The numbers have been steadily increasing over the past week or two. Several of my trees are currently flowering, attracting hundreds of the butterflies who feed on the nectar.

Rather than attempting to capture the entire swarm, I focused on capturing one at a time. This is a female Belenois java teutonia. There were at least two other varieties of butterfly hovering between the flowers, but this species was by far the most abundant.
