STARTING the Kepler Track at Rainbow Reach, I followed the trail in the opposite direction most people take. The maps I had studied of the area seemed to indicate doing the track clockwise would be easier.
From Rainbow Reach I hiked through alternating sections of spectacular rainforest and tussock wetlands near Lake Manapouri before a brief descent to the Moturau Hut.
The hut was next to the lake at Shallow Bay, so I spent much of the afternoon relaxing by the lake watching the weather start to close in as rain fell in the fiords on the other side of the mountains.
