WELL IT’S early morning and very cold at the moment. The sun’s about to rise over the hill. We’re heading up into the mountains over there and check out this view. We’re heading somewhere up in those hills there. Hopefully we’re getting up to one or two viewpoints and getting some spectacular views with the clouds clearing.

OK we’ve now reached the junction. The main track heads back up in that direction but we’re going to head up the valley up here. It’s going to be a long steep track apparently so we’ll see how we go. The sun’s now risen. This is the right-hand side of the W that we’re going to do today. They call it the W track because the main track we took our packs along makes up the bottom of the W. The three-day walks run roughly perpendicular to the main track making up the shape of the W. So, this is the third leg of the W, and we’ll see how far we get.

OK we’re a few hundred metres above the flats already. It’s been quite a long steep climb up the hill and it look like we’re fairly near the top. Then there will be a bit of a flat section before the final climb to the main lookouts.

We’re several hundred metres up the hill now at a place called Windy Pass. You can see we have a good view up the valley now and the river tumbling way below us. So hopefully the steep part is behind us now.

We’ve passed the end of the forest and about to start the substantial climb up to the main viewpoint. The back of the valley and the mountains are getting quite a bit closer now. We’re just stopping here for a little break before the big climb.

Well I’m now coming to you from one of the lookouts. There are several lookouts here and we’ve found a really nice one with a view up to the spectacular towers. I’ve never seen mountains like this before where they have vertical walls of rock all around them. Obviously due to some sort of glacial action you can see the moraine from the end of one glacier coming from the mountains there. Some of the others in the group have gone up there across the side of the face apparently. This is as far as I’m going today up the third branch of the W trek. This is a very beautiful spot here just out of the forest in the sun. This is the vegetation; it is a very rugged area up here. It is a beautiful day up here but it’s quite cold. In winter I imagine this will be massively harsh. I’m going to take a bit of time and enjoy this and obviously I’ve got some good photos already of these absolutely spectacular mountains. I’ll catch you again at the bottom.

Okay we’re back at the camping ground now having hiked for about eight hours up in the mountains up there. I think this is the end of the trekking for the W Trek. It’s been a pretty tough track actually with a lot of steep up and downs but I’ve made it and successfully got here in one piece. Tomorrow we’re going to be travelling onwards so it will be nice to be back in a vehicle again. It’s been quite an amazing place here to explore and great to start to get to know the legendary Patagonia area. There are a lot of other areas to explore in Patagonia so it shall continue tomorrow.
