ARRIVING at the north bank of the Brisbane River at Northside Riverside Park near the Gateway Bridge at first light, I start heading upstream towards the city centre, passing the all but abandoned cruise ship terminal and precinct constructed from brightly coloured shipping containers.

I reach a vantage point on Brett's Wharf to watch the sunrise before following the new Lores Bonney Riverwalk which has in recent years been constructed over the riverbank between the placid river and the busy Kingsford Smith Drive, the main road between the city and the airport. The wide walkway is busy with walkers and joggers making the most of the relative coolness of the early morning before the temperature climbs too much. The track is divided into a walkway beside the river and a bikeway on the road side, with numerous cyclists and scooters quickly passing by.

The track rises over Cameron Rocks before diverting to the Breakfast Creek Bridge before returning to the river around the well manicured gardens of Newstead House as the river turns towards New Farm. I relax at the gardens before continuing a short distance along the old wharves now under new apartment buildings. From here I return back along the river as the sunny day quickly heats up.
