RESTING after the six day trek, there was little more to do today than to catch a bus down to Hobart. Checking out of the pod hostel, I headed to the nearby transit centre and once on board, I just looked out the window watching the scenery go by as we headed up the Emu Valley passing several small historical villages with buildings constructed by sandstone blocks. In between the villages was fertile farmland. After a couple of hours, the road started winding its way over some hills before descending to the Derwent River, which down at this end was a large tidal estuary. We crossed the estuary over a bridge before heading downstream into Hobart city. Stopping at the city centre, I checked into my nearby hotel, settling in before taking a walk into the nearby city centre. The sky was overcast and drizzly here in stark constast to the bright sunshine of Launceston. After exploring the town centre, I headed to the nearby waterfront now the rain had stopped falling and the clouds were starting to clear. Most of the boats and buildings along the waterfront were for supporting the tourism industry. The tours I will be going on over the next three days all leave from here, a reasonably short walking distance from where I was staying. Some of the buildings here were very historic, and along the waterfront were a couple of statues from the Antarctic expeditions that departed from here, including Ross and Mawson's expeditions. After exploring the waterfront, I headed back to the hotel to rest for the remainder of the day in anticipation of three busy days coming up. |
