Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey follows the rugged coastline south from Coogee passing more headlands and beaches until entering the narrow entrance to Botany Bay where I continue to the beach at La Perouse from where a ferry once crossed the harbour.

Today's Journey
Thick fog envelopes Coogee Beach as I set off in the early morning. The ends of the beach are hardly visible yet there are plenty of people going for their early morning walks and swims. |
A track follows above the cliffs going around a few headlands before going into suburbia alternating with small coastal parks as I continue navigating my way southward. |
After quite some time going around the headlands with no beaches, the track drops into the long Maroubra Beach which I follow to its end. |
Reaching the end of the beach, I follow the trail over the scrubby Malabar Headland. |
After several hours rounding more headlands I pass above Malabar Beach before continuing around more headlands. |
A track continues heading around the Randwick Golf Course before heading into Little Bay. Cape Banks is now visible not too much further ahead. |
I stop at Cape Banks for lunch, from where I watch ships heading through the narrow entrance into Botany Bay. |
Heading a bit further towards the entrance of Botany Bay, I watch the Sydney to Hobart yacht race boats speed their way southward, the fastest ones reaching Hobart in a couple of days. |
Once insid Botany Bay, I stop at the Bare Island Fort looking over the pristine water of Botany Bay. The headlands at Kernell marking tomorrow's starting point are just a short distance across the bay. |
From Bare Island Fort, I continue a little further along the bay to La Perouse, where once a regular commuter ferry service crossed from here to Kernell, but the ferry stopped operating a few decades ago. Here I complete today's hike, having continuously followed the coast all the way from Palm Beach over 160 kilometres away. |
