Introduction to today's journey

Today's journey heads southward from Waterfall Valley along easy terrain above the treeline heading around the base of Barn Bluff to our lunchtime stop at Lake Will. From there we continue rising over a hill and descending to Lake Windermere before continuing to Windermere hut and campsite.

Today's Journey

Caption

Departing Waterfall Valley, we follow the boardwalks over the swampy heathland swinging our way around Barn Bluff.

The terrain we walk on is fairly flat, but looking downstream, deep valleys cut into the mountains carved by rivers flowing towards the northern coast of the island.

The track is mostly boardwalk over the delicate heathland scrub as we cross the large tableland.

We descend to a low point in the plateau where small lakes fill the depressions.

Turning off the main track, we head towards Barn Bluff reaching Lake Will where we stop for lunch.

Returning to the main track, we continue following the boardwalk through the low subalpine heathland scrub across the plateau.

We eventually reach the edge of an escarpment from where I can see Lake Windermere and glimpse tonight's campsite in the bush behind the far side. Beyone the lake rise the peaks of Tasmania's highest mountains where we will be passing over the next few days.

The rocky track descends to follow the swampy shore of Lake Windermere.

Heading up above the lake, we reach the new Windermere Hut just before reaching our camping ground.

The camping ground has a large platform to pitch our tents.
