Introduction to today's journey
Today's journey starts with a long drive up to the summit of Mount Wellington before returning to Hobart exploring the city and botanical gardens. During the afternoon we travel across the Derwent River to explore historic Richmond and the Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary.
Today's Journey
Departing the city centre in the early morning, we head up the long winding road towards the top of Mount Wellington. |
The 1271 metre high summit is very cold at about five degrees. From here though we have spectacular views down to the city (see top image). |
A sheltered lookout tower gives the best views down the mountain to the city far below. |
Returning down the mountain we have a look at the old Carlton brewery, Tasmania's oldest having been established here in the early 1800s. |
Nearby is the entrance to the old women's prison set up during convict times and now long abandoned. |
I relax in the Hobart Botanical Gardens in the middle of the day. |
In the middle of the gardens is a very beautiful tropical garden house. |
In the afternoon we head across the other side of the Derwent River to the historic Richmond village, below which an old stone bridge crosses the river. |
From Richmond we head out into the country to visit the Bonorong Zoo, where we see lots of wildlife including wombat. |
The zoo includes a surgery with a window through which we see a surgery taking place on a spotted tail quoll. |
